While House of the Dragon was on everyone’s lips in 2022 and even won a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series, it’s been 12 years since the first season of the main series Game of Thrones first flickered across screens. The adaptation of the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by the American fantasy writer George RR Martin became one of the most successful television productions of all time and spawned numerous world stars. In addition to Kit Harrington (John Snow), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Emilia Clarke played Daenerys Targaryan in the hearts of the audience. But at first she apparently struggled with her role.
Game of Thrones: Emilia Clarke found filming scary
In the legendary hit series Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke mimics the initially inexperienced and shy Daenerys Targaryan, who develops over the course of eight seasons into the feared dragon rider and, as Queen of Westeros, rules over a huge empire. The British actress seems to have had a similar experience during the filming of Game of Thrones.
As Emilia Clarke tells in the “Armchair Expert” podcast, she found the filming of the first season in particular to be very disturbing and scary. As a 23-year-old, she had just graduated from drama school and agreed to play the leading role in Game of Thrones without having read the script. When she finally found out that the fantasy series is full of violent excesses and sometimes drastic sex scenes, she realized that she had no experience of working naked in front of a film crew in corresponding scenes.
