In virtually every home there is already a Smart TV. All because in practice the way we watch television has been changing a lot. So, in addition to traditional channels, we often resort to various streaming services for which these devices are a gateway. However, due to the fact that they are increasingly advanced, they are also exposed to many dangers and there is little to be careful about. Right now this is how they can attack your Smart TV!

Heads up! This is how they can attack your Smart TV!

the forms of attack

Software vulnerabilities

Smart TVs already have complex operating systems, just like computers and smartphones. This means that criminals can use some more general methods of exploiting vulnerabilities to gain access to your device. That said, if your TV’s operating system is out of date, it’s much easier for criminals to find flaws in the software and take advantage of them.

Once they have access, they can do anything from accessing your personal information to completely taking control of the device.

Pen drive infected

Another way for criminals to access your smart TV is by using an infected USB drive. This happens when they put a pen drive in our TV that executes any malicious code that is stored there.

This is a particularly dangerous type of attack, as it does not require any knowledge of the device or network configuration to be successful. As such, you need to be careful with who has physical access to your equipment.

Ataques de malware e Spyware

Another way for criminals to access your smart TV is through malware and spyware. Malware is malicious software that attackers can use to gain access to your device, while spyware is malicious software that can monitor your activities and steal your personal information.

Once they get into your smart TV, they can use this malware and spyware to get what they’re really looking for.

Through WiFi

If your TV is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it is vulnerable to criminals. By using some tools they can access the Wi-Fi network and take control of the device.

misconfigured settings

When setting up your smart TV, it’s important that everything is done right. Without proper setup, you risk leaving your TV vulnerable to attack.

Signs your TV is infected

If you suspect that your smart TV has been hacked or is infected then you should be aware of some signs.

Examples of this are unexpected ads or pop-up messages. This is always a strong sign of malware.

Furthermore, if your Smart TV is suddenly taking longer to respond than usual, it could indicate that some threat is slowing down the system.

Same with unusual network activity.

Likewise, if installed applications that you do not recognize start to appear, you must be careful. Also if settings are changed.

What do you have to do right now?

Keep firmware up to date

This is the first check to always do. Many users ignore software and firmware updates when it comes to smart TVs. However, it is extremely important to keep your Smart TV’s software up to date, as this can help protect against security vulnerabilities and other bugs. In fact this is as essential as updating your smartphones and computers.

Check your router security

Make sure your router is suggested. This will keep not only your smart TV safe, but also the other devices that are connected. It is very important to choose passwords and also to disable some services that are not needed. It might be a good idea to also opt for another connection method if you used WPS. See here how to be safer.

roubar Wi-Fi

Disable automatic links

When setting up your smart TV, turn off any automatic connections to networks or apps. This will prevent any malicious users from accessing your device without your knowledge.

Set a PIN or password

Most TVs come with a PIN code or password that you can configure in your device’s settings. Remember to change this pin code or password periodically, and never share it with anyone.

Be careful what you download and install

When it comes to downloading apps or streaming content on your smart TV, always be careful when dealing with unknown sources. You should only download apps from trustworthy sources and avoid following any suspicious links. It’s just that many people end up infected when they try to download certain IPTV apps that theoretically give access to a lot of content such as premium channels.

Be careful how you connect to your TV

Whenever possible, avoid connecting additional devices to your smart TV. For example, pen drives that may be infected. It’s just that they can be a gateway to dangerous content.

cover the webcam

One of the most important things to do is cover your TV’s webcam (if you have one) when you’re not using it. This will prevent anyone from being able to see your activities.

If you do all these things your Smart TV will no longer be in danger and this is really important not to say essential.

If you do all this, they will hardly be able to successfully attack your Smart TV.
