01/12/2023 at 15:41 by Rhonda Bachmann – More than three years have now passed since the release of Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries. In a podcast, Piranha Games President Russ Bullock revealed that a new installment in the series is in development. The new project is scheduled to appear in 2024.
The Canadian game studio Piranha Games is sticking with the Mechwarrior series. This was revealed by the developer’s president, Russ Bullock, in a recent interview with the podcast NoGutsNoGalaxy. However, along with more content for 2019’s Mechwarrior 5, the studio is also working on a new project in the franchise, which is targeting a 2024 release.
Mechwarrior project is “single player co-op” type
Russ Bullock announced a new project in the long-running Mechwarrior series on the podcast without giving too much away. “We’re still working on Mechwarrior,” Bullock said in the interview. “I’m a bit surprised that we can work on it for so long and it’s great. And everyone knows that of course we’ll be releasing DLC 4 for Mechwarrior 5.”
Then the President of Piranha Games hinted at the new project in the Mechwarrior universe: “There is another Mechwarrior game that Piranha is developing. I just want to say that it’s not Mechwarrior Online 2, it’s not the sequel by Mechwarrior Online. It’s not an online PvP game. It’s more like Mechwarrior 5, but it’s a standalone game, a standalone product.”
The unspecified game is to appear for the PC and for consoles and should follow more of a “single-player co-op type”. The release is scheduled for 2024. In the interview, Bullock also indicated that he is very interested in a Mechwarrior Online sequel. However, the need for a license renewal would bring further challenges. Piranha Games still has the rights to the Mechwarrior license until 2025. However, a full Mechwarrior Online 2 would require the studio more than the remaining time.
