A good video game movie? Disney plays it Fortnite
A good video game movie?
You know it as much as we do: when cinema mixes with video games, it’s only rarely good news. If recent productions (Uncharted, Pokémon Detective Pikachu) and to come (Super Mario Bros, the movie) still allow us to be a little more optimistic about the next adaptations, it is difficult not to remember the very many Hollywood attempts in the past. Mortal Kombat, Prince of Persia, Need for Speed, Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed, so many cult licenses have had the misfortune to find themselves in the sights of a few film producers more attracted by the potential success of an adaptation on the big screen than by respecting the original work.
However, just because cinema has rarely been able to make a good video game adaptation doesn’t mean it’s incapable of dealing with the subject. This is precisely what tried to prove Free Guy, released on August 11, 2021 in cinemas. Directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Night at the Museum), it features Guy (played by Ryan Reynolds), who is none other than a simple NPC in an open world video game. While the real gamers repeatedly shoot each other through a city that looks like a GTA playground, Guy lives his programmed life without being able to do anything else, until the day when he manages to take control of his destiny by falling in love with a player. A seemingly classic scenario, but which gives rise to quite successful entertainment.
Disney plays Fortnite
Available tomorrow Friday, January 13 on Disney +, Free Guy indeed offers viewers to dive into a world that will echo many players. If, as we told you above, its open world will quickly give you the impression of being playing the next Grand Theft Auto, Shawn Levy’s film will not be content to remain on the surface in its references.
Skins, secondary missions, points, bugs and many other elements typical of video games in general await you in this feature film, which will even allow you to drop some objects straight out of cult licenses to give a Fortnite side to everything. But in addition to all this fan service side, you will also be able to enjoy endearing characters and a little deeper than what one would expect from such entertainment. If the film’s trailer, its script or even its actors intrigue you, all you have to do is head to Disney+ to find it on your screens tomorrow.
