For the remake of Dead Space they thought about removing a pause function.
Going to the bathroom, getting supplies from the kitchen, or just taking a break from gaming: the pause function in video games is undoubtedly a great thing.
In Dead Space Remake, however, it was considered to do without it.
Joel MacMillan is Realization Director at Motive Studios. In an interview with Inverse, he spoke about how they thought about removing the pause function. But that would have taken away the security from players to take a deep breath.
“In horror games you can pause and have a moment of safety. You can breathe. And I think you get a break from that. This relieves some of the tension. But with persistent online games, you’re playing with dozens of other people, and you can’t just pause everyone’s game.”
“I think if you removed that feature, horror games would be a lot more impressive – you’d really feel like you’re never really safe.”
While he himself prefers a pause function, he has to admit that not having it would add to the experience and emotions.
“I still tend to get nervous playing these games. So I personally like it when there is a pause button. But if you really want a scary, anxiety-inducing experience, removing the pause button would help.”
Don’t worry, you can take a deep breath and play Dead Space Remake, including the ability to pause it, starting January 27th on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
