Don’t play as Luffy
One of the advantages of One Piece Odyssey compared to games such as One Piece: World Seeker is that it immediately allows you to embody all the members (once found) of the crew. Certainly, this allows you to walk around with your character, but not only. Changing characters has an interest in play. Each pirate has his own useful abilities during the exploration phases. At times, you will necessarily have to use Zoro or Chopper to advance. But don’t forget to take advantage of Sanji’s nose to pick up ingredients along the way or Usopp’s slingshot to access new resources.
In combat, exchange fighters
Same observation in combat: exploit the advantages of each member of the crew. And to do this, you can, at any time, change who is on the field. Get to know the different abilities of the Straw Hats so you can adapt your battle plan depending on the type (strength, technique, speed) or number of enemies. In general, do not neglect any fighter. Admittedly, Luffy and Zoro are particularly powerful at first glance, but each fight is different and requires sending the right pirate on the battlefield… and in the right place.
Because yes, the fighter exchange functionality does not only allow you to choose who takes part in the battle. It also makes it possible to place the members of the crew well. One Piece Odyssey battles work with a zone system that must be exploited to achieve victory. Some characters are clearly more effective in close combat, while others need to be withdrawn to show their full potential. And that’s why you shouldn’t hesitate to shake up the seating plan a bit to win.
Save all the time
It’s said in-game, but it bears repeating: saving regularly is vital in One Piece Odyssey. The slightest defeat will indeed bring you back to the last save point. There isn’t really a checkpoint to speak of. Admittedly, the game automatically saves at certain times, but it’s more to allow you to come back to this moment if you ever have to abandon your game in the meantime. But if you lose a fight, autosaves don’t matter: it’ll be back to the last save point. Don’t be fooled because it can be particularly frustrating to lose and have to relive an already grueling hour of combat the first time around. Even if it sometimes forces you to retrace your steps, save regularly.
To party
Another reflex to have: rest near the campfire as soon as possible or when you are about to face a big opponent. It doesn’t sound like much, but partying gives you a stat boost for future fights. What’s more, it’s via the campfire that you can cook Sanji’s good dishes or make Usopp’s marbles. In short, it is the ideal place to prepare yourself before a fight. So for once partying can give you a real advantage, don’t deprive yourself!
Adapt the equipment to the opponent
Throughout the adventure, you will face particularly tough enemies. But it is always possible to shorten a fight which would have been laborious by using the power of the equipment. These can be changed at any time. It is therefore quite possible to make Luffy more powerful for the duration of a fight, to then favor Zoro or Nami. It all depends on the weaknesses of the opponent in front. Especially since it is very easy to change equipment according to the stat you want to highlight thanks to the recommended equipment tool.
Note also that you should not hesitate to spend berries to obtain prestigious equipment. These will allow you to make the difference during the fights. Once Robin’s workshop is unlocked, also remember to merge your equipment. Even if you don’t get the perfect gear, it allows you to merge two effects and it’s far from negligible, so keep that in mind.
Don’t underestimate Usopp
Usopp may not be the strongest pirate in the crew, but it would be a shame to leave him out. He can indeed make elementary attacks capable of modifying the state of the adversaries. A non-negligible advantage which often makes it possible to change the situation in combat. We therefore advise you to find a place for him on the ground so that he can quietly weaken opponents sensitive to his attacks. Note also that we must not neglect Usopp’s marbles either (which can be used by any character). They allow not only to affect the state of the adversaries but also their stats.
Abuse stat bonuses
And since we are talking about malus / bonus stats, it is important to tell you to abuse it again and again. Whether it’s with food, marbles or special skills, you have to weaken your enemy and give strength to your allies. This may seem obvious to JRPG regulars, but others may tend to rush in and attack right away without worrying about these stat bonuses. A technique that will quickly show its limits in One Piece Odyssey. We therefore advise you to quickly familiarize yourself with the different bonuses that exist and to always have under the code the dishes, balls or skills that correspond to your strategy.
To throw money around
To do what we have just said, especially concerning the dishes, you will have to go to the checkout. Indeed, some ingredients, but also equipment and consumables, are to be purchased. Admittedly, Nami may cringe seeing you spend her precious berries without limit. But have no remorse. It is easy to collect berries throughout the adventure. And when we say adventure, we are talking about the main story and some side battles. If you use Nami’s skills and explore every corner of One Piece Odyssey, you will never go bankrupt. So don’t be stingy and spend lavishly.
Look for the cubes
At first, One Piece Odyssey leaves little room for exploration. The game guides you and prevents you from doing what you want. This is why as soon as it leaves you a little freedom, we can only advise you to grab it and take advantage of it to explore every nook and cranny in search of the little cubes. These allow you to improve the skills of each. If you want to be able to kill certain enemies in one shot, you will have to go through this. So, to your cubes! Note that it’s possible to grab the cubes high or out of reach with Luffy’s powers, so don’t forget to look up a bit.
Return to Memoria
In One Piece Odyssey, it is possible to return to places that have marked fans of Eiichiro Oda’s work, such as Alabasta or Water Seven. If history will guide you when you first arrive at the scene, you can return at your leisure. And we even advise you to do so since there are many things to discover in these places. Unprecedented attacks, secondary missions, contracts to honor… Enough to become much stronger during the hard fights that await you. So remember to take a break away from the main plot in the kingdom of Memoria.
