Hyundai intends to revolutionize the electric cars of tomorrow. For this, the Korean manufacturer is launching the Ionic 5 with a “Crab” version capable of completely eliminating slots.
The electric car that can do the crabbing
At first glance, we can say that a car that can roll crab has absolutely no interest. However, the reality is very different and this could be the car of tomorrow. Hummer has tried a crab mode that allows the front and rear wheels to turn in the same direction at the same time. This allows you to ride diagonally.
To do this, just press a button for 4 seconds and you’re done. But the wheels do not turn 90 degrees, but only a few centimeters. A crab mode, which does not end up like crabs. On the other hand, Hyundai goes to the end of things and offers a real vehicle that moves sideways.
Installed on an Ionic 5, the technology called e-Corner brings new possibilities to city driving. Obviously, the first thing that we think of being able to roll sideways and to place ourselves at the level of a parking space and to return with ease.
Endless possibilities for this electric car
In crab mode the four-wheelers face each other front and rear. This means that to crab right or left, one side of the car is in forward, while the other is in reverse. Fortunately everything is automated and you just have to activate the mode. So you never have to slot again. Especially since if all the cars in town had this function, it would be possible to gain a few slots. There would no longer be a need for space between each vehicle.
The second mode allows you to rotate 360 degrees. This can in particular make it possible to make a U-turn without despite a very small space. We can imagine for example that you park your car in forward gear in your garage and if its width is greater than the length of the car, you can come out in forward gear again.
Similar to the previous version, there is pivot mode. The front wheels don’t move, but the rear two move at 90 degrees. You turn with the front wheels as the pivot point.
Finally, as with the electric Hummer, it is possible to drive diagonally. For this option, difficult to find a plausible scenario to use it. But one thing is for sure, it will turn heads.
The vehicle should be marketed by 2025.
