After a crazy first season, will the anime phenomenon Chainsaw man be back soon? Between the growing sales of the manga, the undeniable success of this adaptation and the teaser during the final episode, it’s a safe bet that MAPPA has not finished with the work of Tatsuki Fujimoto.
Summary
A successful first season Chainsaw Man season 2: can we believe it?
A successful first season
In 2022, it was difficult to miss the Chainsaw Man anime as it was talked about. Tatsuki Fujimoto’s absolutely brilliant story, enhanced by MAPPA’s exemplary animation work, took the anime world by storm during last year’s fall season. The shōnen has met with undeniable success while it currently remains the anime with the highest number of reviews on Crunchyroll for an average rating of 4.9/5.
This success was justly celebrated not long ago by Shueisha, the famous publishing house for Weekly Shōnen Jump that oversees the publication of the manga.
Additionally, the anime also gave the original work a significant boost in sales. From the first episode, sales of Chainsaw Man tomes ballooned by nearly 4 million. Exceptional figures, witnesses of a growing popularity. But while part 2 of the manga is currently in pre-publication on Shueisha’s Manga Plus application (available for free), part 1 still has enough material to be offered a second season of anime. Should we believe it? Certainly.
Chainsaw Man season 2: should we believe it?
For the moment, the studio’s schedule is relatively busy. MAPPA is currently working on the second season of Vinland Saga which has just started, before offering us the adaptation of the Shibuya arc by Jujutsu Kaisen as well as the first season of Hell’s Paradise and the finale of Attack on Titan . Major projects, which leave little room for additional work. While the estimates speak of around a year and a half for the production of season 1 of Chainsaw Man, it seems complex to bet on a release in 2023.
MAPPA hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet, but it’s hard to believe that the Chainsaw Man anime won’t continue when you consider the data cited above. It’s not impossible for the anime to end so abruptly, there are enough examples in the world of japanimation to attest to that. However, with the end of this first season which ends with a huge cliffhanger and the appearance of Reze, the central character of the following arc, it’s a safe bet that MAPPA and Shueisha will decide to launch the production of a second season.
The first season ends around chapters 38-39 of volume 5. An additional season of two courses would be enough to complete all of part 1 of the manga. What’s more, we should also note the arrival of important characters from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s story, including Reze, who is voiced by Reina Ueda. The Seiyuu has a substantial CV, having worked on anime like My Hero Academia, Dr. Stone, Aoashi, Mushoku Tensei or Bleach: Thousand Year Blood-War.
Why choose an accomplished Seiyuu for a character who would only be entitled to a simple wink appearance, especially when we know that the anime has chosen to take several beginner actors to double certain protagonists? Big teaser, explicit clues… MAPPA clearly plays the hype card. It remains to be seen whether the studio is simply having fun with the fans, or whether it intends to offer us the adaptation of our dreams.
