From Greek mythology to Nordic legends, God of War Ragnarök takes us into a new LORE, even denser and more mysterious than its previous trilogy. However, does the title have the merit of being faithful to true Scandinavian legends? We will discover that together in this new column!
From Ancient Greece to the Nordic Kingdom
The northern wind hit the fate of God of War (2018) head on. After a trilogy centered on Greek mythology, the lore of the game is reoriented towards the Scandinavian deities, offering an alternative to the completely credible scenario. Veterans of the series can rejoice to discover a game that does not deny its origins and that creates a new identity by remaining faithful to the codes of God of War. According to Cory Barlog, the boss of the license, the world of the saga is a kind of multiverse in which all the mythologies coexist! Throughout the tomb of Tyr, we also find some references to Japanese or Egyptian cults. Indeed, the meeting of the latter with the gods of different countries is represented by objects and gifts, left here in homage to the God of Nordic mythology.
After Ragnarök?
Ragnarok is the final chapter in the Nordic arc of Kratos and Atreus’ chilling adventures. Regarding the after, some theories are already circulating around the next destination. If we dig a little deeper, the episode released in 2018 was originally supposed to take place in Egypt ! After comparing pharaohs and vikings, the Santa Monica team chose to focus on the character development of Kratos. A wise decision that allows her story to end on a high note, after having fought a great battle during her life. Small precision concerning the relics of the temple of Tire mentioned a little above, it is important to remember the passage where Atreus uses an Egyptian vase as a helmet on his head! A last clue that leaves a door open to the trail of the Osirian Myth for the future of God of War.
