It is rare to have good news around the environment. Especially when it comes to such rapid change as the one we are experiencing without even realizing it.
The ozone layer is finally recovering
The last
rapport
on the ozone layer published in partnership with the UN, NASA, the European Union and many others is very positive on the subject. In the 2022 report, we learn that stabilization and gradual repair continue. It would even tend to accelerate.
The human being is thus responsible for this change. This proves once again that by finding the exact origin of the problem and with solutions applied on a global scale, global warming is solvable, at least with joint efforts.
The report thus explains that by 2040, most of the globe will have the ozone layer above it restored. For the Arctic, we will have to wait five more years. On the other hand, the distant date is that of Antarctica, scheduled for 2066.
Why does the ozone layer repair itself?
First, we must understand the primary reason for the rapid destruction of the ozone layer in certain parts of the globe. What are called rare gases like all hydrofluorocarbons are the root cause. They were present in the refrigerant gases of refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. We had to find a fast and equally effective alternative for it to be adopted.
This is where the Montreal Protocol made it possible to legislate on these gases and to ban them. But that hasn’t stopped some geographic areas from continuing to use illegal gas. In China in particular, concern grew in 2018, because a large part of this pollution was not regulated. Fortunately today, China has changed its tune and is legislating.
This report has been compiled from resources since the first investigations in 1981. Today we have a great perspective on the situation and the aim is to also apply it to global warming. The problem is that the cause is not easy to identify and especially to change. Today, economic issues have taken precedence over environmental issues.
There is still a change as the investment and environment gradually become profitable. The only solution is to find equally effective alternatives for an equivalent cost. This involves freight transport, which is a major polluting sector, or the textile sector. It’s a questioning that can solve the problem before it’s too late.
