Do you know what is the leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 4 in France? Domestic accidents. Our interiors are teeming with dangers for the little ones and no risks can be taken. For this reason, LG has just urgently recalled nearly 60,000 4K TVs from their factories.
The dangers of screens for children
It’s an open secret, screens present dangers for our little ones. During the early years of brain development, it is essential to enrich social interactions and the awakening of the senses… everything that TV does not do. Planting your toddlers in front of a cartoon is harmful in many ways.
According to theHealth insurance, children who spend more time in front of screens are more likely to be ‘overweight’. Correlation is not causation: there is a good chance that this excess weight can be explained more by the eating behavior of disadvantaged children. The poorest children spend on average 2 hours more per day in front of screens than rich children. The poor eat worse and are therefore more often obese than the rich.Children who spend too much time in front of a screen lose 25% of cardiovascular capacity. Logic: heckling outings with friends are frequently replaced by hours in front of the TV, a tablet or even mom/dad’s smartphone. Less sport equals less good heart. A note from Public Health France dated 2020 strongly advises against leaving your children in front of a screen before leaving for school. Primary language disorders trained by this practice would have become commonplace. If the child does not even discuss with his parents what he has seen on TV, his chances of developing such disorders are 6 times greater than those of a child who grows up far from screens. In class, attention disorders are also much higher in children who grow up facing the black mirror.
Novelty of the day with the recall of these nearly 60,000 LG 4K TVs: the potentially deadly danger to our children does not come from TVs on, but off. We explain to you.
Why are these 56,700 LG 4K TVs at risk of injuring or even killing children?
As said in the introduction, domestic accidents represent the greatest dangers for our children. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an official agency of the US government, has designated 4 LG 4K TV models as potentially harmful.
Here is the CPSC statement, translated by us:
The TV can become unstable when placed on a stand, posing a serious tipping and pinching hazard that could result in injury or death to children and others.
The 4 models affected by this recall have one thing in common: these are huge 86-inch 4K TVs, about 2.20 meters diagonally, which weigh about 45 kilos each. According to LG, the televisions are not defective in themselves, the risk of falling would only be present in case the installation of the foot would be badly done.
Because yes, the problem pointed out here does not concern the wall fixings (even if one might think that a slightly friable wall would have a hard time withstanding such a substantial weight in the long term), but the feet supplied with the LG 86UQ8000AUB, 86UQ7070ZUD, 86UQ7590PUD, and 86NANO75UQA.
Prevention is better than cure : no drama has happened yetbut LG still initiated recall procedures for more than 57,000 televisions sold mainly in the United States and Mexico.
