At the start of the year, one of the most awaited series arrives. For good reason, HBO is adapting the famous survivalist and post-apocalyptic franchise from Naughty Dog studios to serial format. On the night of January 15 to 16, 2023 began the adventures of Joel and Ellie on the small screen. This was an opportunity for the creative teams to slip an easter egg into the first episode for fans.

A cinematic wink
To say that HBO’s adaptation of the cult post-apo license from Naughty Dog studios was expected is a mild understatement. After being critically acclaimed, the first episode (as a reminder the first season has 9 in total) was broadcast to a large audience. In France, the adventures of Elie and Joel are the preserve of Amazon Prime Video, which has claimed the rights to them. Already hugely popular with gamers, The Last of Us is now trying to reach a wider audience. What better than the flagship format of the 21st century – the series – to fulfill this objective?
Shortly before the Outbreak, the trigger of the game and therefore of the series, Joel and his daughter meet to celebrate the latter’s birthday. During this touching scene taking place on the sofa in the living room, Sarah offers her father a watch that she has just had repaired and offers to watch a movie, but not just any movie. It is Curtis and Viper 2, a fictional feature film taken from a saga highly appreciated by Joel. Ellie mentions this movie in The Last of Us part II when conversing with Dina. Note that Curtis and Viper 4, also present in TLOU 2 via a poster on a wall, would be the favorite opus of our gruff hero according to Ellie’s words.
A historic agreement
A few days before the broadcast of the first episode of The Last of Us series, while its distribution platform on French territory still remains a mystery, Amazon Prime Video announces that it has signed a historic agreement with HBO and Warner. This collaboration, which follows the end of the one with OCS recently acquired by Canal+, grants the SVOD service the rights to HBO-branded series (Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, but also Chernobyl, The Wire, Westworld, etc. .) and therefore The Last of Us. If the latter is available at no extra charge on Prime Video, a “Warner Pass” will be set up from March 2023. The price of this offer remains unknown at the time of writing these few lines .
