January 17th, 2023 at 3:21 p.m. by Rhonda Bachmann – While some users are still waiting for the latest Fritzbox update 7.50 for their router, AVM is adding another device to the list for laboratory versions 7.39/7.51. This time it’s the Router 7490’s turn to test the preview of the next big update.
AVM continues to roll out new updates for their Fritz boxes. Many users are still waiting for their router to be operated with the latest FritzOS 7.50 update. Distribution of the latest update started in early December but was suspended over the holidays. The rollout resumed on January 12 and owners of a Fritzbox 7530 were able to download the latest patch. At the same time, AVM is currently adding other routers to the list for laboratory versions 7.39/7.51. Today the Fritzbox 7490 router was added, a kind of absolute classic that appeared in August 2013 – almost ten years ago.
Fritzbox 7490 can test upcoming features
The Fritz Laboratory is an AVMs program for test versions, for which users of a FritzBox can register. Possible upcoming features for the router can be tested before the official release. The versions 7.39 and 7.51 currently in circulation share many functions, some of which, however, are not equally available for all models. While some Fritzboxes have been able to test the new options since the beginning of November, the 7490 router has just been added to the list of selected models today.

With the pre-releases 7.39/7.51 some new functions as well as possible improvements and changes are tested. Among other things, the performance of WireGuard VPN connections should be improved through software acceleration. There is also an increased download speed for guest access and changes to the smart home system and the stability of the operating system.
The new functions include the display of the cable spectrum in the user interface and an IP blacklist for incoming packets. There is also improved dynamic smart repeating and other smart home options. Additional features for FritzFon and the FritzBox app are also included.
