With the arrival of The Last of Us series, the year is off to a flying start. Yes, after months of waiting, the show by Neil Druckmann (co-president of Naughty Dog | director of the PS3 game) and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) is finally available in France, on Amazon Prime. The show has opted for a weekly release! Each of the nine episodes will therefore be released overnight from Sunday to Monday, and today, it’s time to talk about the first chapter, called When You’re Lost in the Darkness. In total, 1h20 of images that sweep away a tragic event that players know well, but also the daily life of “post-apo” micro-societies, while Joël – the hero – and his friend Tess do their best to get out of it… What does it give in the end? It’s time to give our opinion.
A series “too faithful” to the game?
From the beginning, The Last of Us series (produced by HBO) was presented as a very faithful adaptation to the basic material, namely the eponymous PS3 video game released in 2013! After all, with Mister Neil Druckmann in charge, how could it be otherwise? So yes, for this first episode, if you know the game well, you know what is going to happen… what tragic event arises, how Joël, Ellie and Tess find themselves embarked on an adventure that is beyond them, etc.
But, is it so serious? Well no, because the show gives to see beyond the video game and teaches us things about the daily life of Joël and his daughter Sarah before the development of Cordyceps, behind the scenes of the Lucioles, the famous resistance group (among others). Somehow, the universe of The Last of Us seems more than ever rooted in reality – and that’s a very good thing… Want more info on the series?
