January 19th, 2023 at 6:01 p.m. by Claus Ludewig – After a week there is another box office update for Avatar 2. With Spider-Man No Way Home from 2021, the Cameron film has left the next heavyweight behind.
Avatar Way of Water continues to write film history. After ousting Jurassic World from 6th place, it’s now moving up another position.
Avatar 2 now in 6th place
At $1.928 billion, Avatar 2 has sailed past Spider-Man No Way Home ($1.921 billion) faster than expected. This puts the Cameron flick at number 6 on the all-time, worldwide list of highest-grossing films. The US market accounts for 29.8 percent (574 million) and the international market for 70.2 percent (1.353 billion). The distance to the current 5th place in the leaderboard is 120 million US dollars. Avengers: Infinity War from 2018 is still ranked there. At the current rate, Avatar 2 will surpass the 2 billion sound barrier in just a few days, then Star Wars: Episode 7 will also be at high risk. If everything goes well this week, next Monday Avatar 2 could overtake this top seller.
Only five films in film history have even grossed two billion, including two films by James Cameron. At number 1 is Avatar 1 (2.9 billion), followed by Avengers: Endgame (2.79 billion), Titanic (2.2 billion) and the aforementioned Star Wars: Episode 7 and Avengers: Infinity War. Cameron would then have three films in the exclusive club of 2 billion films.

In Germany, Avatar 2 is about to enter the top 3 most successful films of all time. The film has currently brought in a little more than 100 million euros, and in the fifth week there were over 700,000 visitors and 10.3 million euros in sales. Only Star Wars Episode 7 keeps Avatar WoW from Cameron providing the three most successful films of all time in Germany.
