On December 14, 2022, the sequel to the greatest cinematic success of all time landed in French cinemas, and took everything in its path. Avatar: The Way of the Water has already collected 2 billion US dollars at the box office, which confirms the start of sequels. Avatar 3 would even be partially filmed with an actress seen in the Game of Thrones series in the cast.
Summary
From Game of Thrones to Avatar 3A hit at the box office
From Game of Thrones to Avatar 3
The Avatar franchise is still in its infancy. If Pandora fans had to wait 13 long years between the first two films, the sequel to the adventures of Jake Sully and the Na’vi people will not be long in coming. According to plans by director James Cameron (Abyss, Terminator 2 Judgment Day, Titanic), three other films are now on the way while two more would be considered. In summary, Avatar 3 / Avatar 4 / Avatar 5 are currently scheduled for December 2024 / 2026 / 2028, i.e. a new opus every two years.
The actress we want to talk about today was revealed to the cast 5 years ago, but we did not yet know how central her role would be in Avatar 3. It is now done. According to our colleagues from Empire magazine in March 2023, Oona Chaplin – the interpreter of the doomed wife of Rob Stark “Talisa” in the HBO series “Game of Thrones” – will play Varangthe leader of the People of Ash in the sequel to the Avatar saga.
With Avatar 3, James Cameron wants to explore his universe ever more, and present a much less pacifist facet of the Na’vis who so far are generally content to defend themselves. The philosophy of life of the people of the ashes will be very different according to the filmmaker, much more warlike and violent. During an interview granted to 20 minutes, he expressed himself in these terms:
I want to reveal the Nav’is from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Navi’s examples. In Avatar 3 we will do the reverse. We will also explore new universes while continuing the story of the main characters. -James Cameron
A hit at the box office
Avatar: The Way of the Water could eventually become the highest-grossing film of all time if it continues its momentum. James Cameron’s film has grossed nearly US$2 billion since its release in mid-December (1.928 billion to be precise) which places it in sixth position, ahead of a certain Spider-Man: No Way Home and its 1.922 billion. There is no doubt that Avatar 2 will climb into the TOP 4 of the most “bankable” films over the next few weeks. It could even claim a place on the podium, or even steal the TOP 1 from its eldest, provided it collects more than 2.923 billion US dollars before the end of its theatrical run.
