When we think of Disney, we usually think of fairytale worlds, brave princesses and mice with gloves. Yet it is a bloodthirsty monster that we are going to talk about today. He is preparing his return to Disney +, lurking in the shadows.
The return hunter? A monster success
The returning hunter?
36 years ago, the film Predator was released in dark rooms. Telling the story of an extremely powerful alien who came to do battle with special forces officers in Central America, the film became cult thanks to a particularly frightening monster and memorable sequences. The action scenes, numerous and impressive for the time, attracted an audience eager for thrills. Predator brought fame to its director, John McTiernan (Crystal Trap, Last Action Hero) and became a franchise that saw the birth of several sequels (as well as crossovers with the Aliens saga).
It is in 2022 that the fifth part of this series is released, soberly titled Prey. The film traces the Predator’s first visit to Earth to a Comanche tribe in 1719. As the terrible creature roams the vicinity, young Naru decides to become the best hunter rather than the bloodied prey. The actress who lends her features to the main character, Amber Midthunder, spoke to Variety about a possible sequel that she considers possible. “I have nothing to communicate, it’s not an official announcement, but I’m not saying that it won’t happen”. The actress adds that there’s a lot of talk about multiple projects, and the new Prey is one of them. “I loved this experience, I loved this film,” she continues.
A monster success
Released on August 5, 2022 on Disney+, Prey marks the arrival of the famous FOX license at Disney. The film had a nice critical success (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and seems to have been massively watched on Hulu and Disney+, even if no figures have been officially communicated. In the United States, where it is offered on Hulu, Prey was “the biggest premiere of a movie or television series ever made” according to the SVOD platform. More concretely, the latest episode of the Predator saga recorded the highest number of viewing hours on Hulu in the first three days after its launch, of all the series and all the films available. Prey was also the most viewed movie premiering on Disney+ under the Star banner at the time of its arrival. It would therefore be surprising if its producers decided to leave it at that..
