The smartphone market as a whole is not doing very well. But not everyone suffers this fall at the same speed. Oppo plummets, Vivo and Xiaomi also fall sharply, but Samsung and Apple are catching up with the branches.

In 2022, the smartphone market has tripped up a bit, plummeting 11%. At least that’s what the analysis firm Canalys suggests, which measures smartphone shipments from factories, a good indicator of the level of sales in the world.

According to them, 1.2 billion phones have been sold worldwide. And since the firm also communicates the market shares over the year of the top 5, we can easily get an idea of the number of phones sold by Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo.

How many smartphones sold for the top 5?

Keep in mind that these are estimates, especially since Canalys makes a point of making a few roundings here and there to present percentages that fall just right. Here is the result of the calculation:

Samsung: around 264 million (22%); Apple: around 228 million (19%); Xiaomi: around 156 million (13%); Oppo and Vivo: around 108 million (9%).

If we compare with 2021, where according to Canalys, 1.35 billion smartphones have passed, here is what it gives:

Samsung : 274,5 millions environ (20 %) ;
Apple : 230,1 millions environ (17 %) ;
Xiaomi : 191,2 millions environ (14 %) ;
Oppo : 145,1 millions environ (11 %) ;
Vivo : 129,9 millions environ (10 %).

Deadweight losses for Chinese brands

We can therefore see that the fall in sales concerns all the brands in the Top 5, but that everyone is not hit as hard. Samsung and Apple lost 3.83% and 0.91% respectively. While at Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, the percentage has two figures: 18.41% loss for Xiaomi, 16.86% for Vivo et Oppo is the big loser in history with 25.57% decline.

These figures no doubt explain the reluctance of Chinese manufacturers in 2022, which very often did not bring many models to the European market, a phenomenon affecting in particular the models which serve as a standard for the brands. We can cite the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Oppo Find N and Vivo X90 for example, which have not made it to us.
