Perfect Dark is a franchise that is near and dear to many people who grew up in the 2000s. It faded somewhat over time simply because Rare was bought by Microsoft and tasked with making games for the Kinect, among other things. It was sad to see the series return outside of Rare thanks to a new Xbox team called The Initiative.
However, not everything went smoothly. After reporting that Crystal Dynamics was phasing out support for Marvel’s Avengers in order to fully dedicate itself to the next Tomb Raider game, insider Miller Ross noted at ResetEra that Perfect Dark was facing some hurdles.
For those who don’t know, Crystal Dynamics has joined Perfect Dark as a satellite studio in 2021. It’s unclear exactly how much they’re contributing, but Perfect Dark is expected to release after Tomb Raider, which is somewhat surprising since Perfect Dark seems to have been in the making for much longer. However, the pandemic and the aforementioned obstacles are likely to contribute to a more intense development. Crystal Dynamics is reportedly preparing to unveil its new Tomb Raider game later this year, which could lead to an actual release this year or next.
If that’s the case, then Perfect Dark could still be years away, which is probably not good news for many Xbox gamers. Xbox has been struggling to release big games at a steady pace, resulting in no major Xbox exclusives in 2022. Big games like Starfield, Redfall and more will be released in 2023, but fans are still very worried about the general state of affairs.
