Turn down the heating, put on your coat, save money: It’s not that easy after all. On the other hand: According to estimates by the consumer advice center, you could save about six percent heating energy with every degree less. How much that means in concrete figures depends of course on your personal situation (e.g. size of apartment, place of residence, number of residents and rooms used, state of the building and renovation, time of year, gas tariff, etc.). But for the sake of simplicity you can calculate with an average gas consumption of 160 kWh per square meter per year. This means that with a gas price for new customers of 35 cents per kWh, heating a 100 square meter apartment will cost you around 5,600 euros a year. In other words, for every degree less, you could save 336 euros in heating costs in this example.
