There are a lot of people who don’t like to sleep in complete darkness. Either because they don’t feel comfortable in the dark or simply because they’re used to it. However, one study found that not sleeping in the dark leads to serious health problems.
Not sleeping in the dark can be dangerous for your health!
The study was published by the National Academy of Sciences and reveals that sleeping in the dark reduces the risk of heart disease and also diabetes. On the other hand, sleeping with a light on, even a dim one, causes heart problems during sleep and affects how the body responds to insulin the next morning. These were the researchers’ main conclusions.
That is, if people significantly minimize the light in the bedroom, that is, turn everything off, they will ensure more health.
The study found that when we are exposed to more light during sleep, the body is in a state of alert and causes the heart rate to increase and the body is not able to rest properly.
But what if you can’t sleep even without any light?
According to scientists if you can’t sleep even without any light then you can get a night light but it will have to be as dim as possible and close to the floor. In this case the color is also important. An amber or red or orange light is less stimulating to the brain. The white and blue lights really should be turned away!
How was this discovered?
The researchers tested the effects of sleeping in moderate light versus dim or non-existent light. That’s when it was realized that exposure to light causes the body to be on alert.
In this way, the heart rate increases, as does the force with which the heart contracts. The tension also rises.
But there is another important issue. “The results of this study demonstrate that just a single night of exposure to moderate ambient lighting during sleep can impair glucose. Also cardiovascular regulation, which are risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.”
