January 23, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. by Claus Ludewig – As announced by Amazon, the Smile donation program will be discontinued in February 2023. You can still do something good while shopping if you go on a shopping spree with the right address.
Recently, it has become certain that there will be a large layoff for the first time in Amazon’s history. With this, CEO Andy Jassy wants to react to the fact that billions in losses in the device division and the recession taking place in some countries are putting pressure on the company account. In addition to laying off 18,000 of its 1.5 million employees worldwide, Amazon is also making savings elsewhere. The Smile donation program will be discontinued on February 20, 2023. This program ran for nine years in the USA and around six years in Germany.
Why is Amazon discontinuing the donation program?
If you go to the special website smile.amazon.de, you can shop at Amazon and donate to charitable organizations at the same time. Amazon automatically pays 0.5 percent of the purchase amount to the charity chosen by the customer. However, there are only selected products on the website and not the entire range.
According to Amazon, Smile is discontinued because it did not achieve the intended effect. Over a million organizations worldwide signed up, leaving little money for individual charities. This year, all organizations involved so far are to receive a final donation from Amazon. For this purpose, the turnover from the year 2022 is calculated for individual months and then there are three monthly turnovers as a donation sum. After the end of Amazon Smile, charities should continue to receive financial support by creating their own wish lists on Amazon and products from them can be bought by Amazon customers.
