Sequel “Avatar” director James Cameron grossed more than $2 billion worldwide, excluding inflation. Thus, “The Way of Water” became the sixth tape in history to overcome this mark.
Cameron, in turn, became the only director in the world whose three films have grossed over $2 billion. “Way of Water” joined the first “Avatar” and “Titanic”.
On the success of the tape Disney said Sunday, noting that the film had earned $2.024 billion worldwide at the time, with $598 million domestic and $1.426 billion overseas ($230 million coming from China).
Cameron has previously stated that Avatar: The Way of Water needs to raise $2 billion to become a profitable project. Now the director is preparing to devote the next six or seven years to creating new parts of the franchise. Avatar: The Way of the Water was released worldwide on December 16, 2022 and grossed half a billion dollars in a matter of days. In Russian cinemas, which can expect penalties, the screenings of the sequel started on December 22.
