On January 27, a few weeks after a divisive The Callisto Protocol, the king of space horror games will make a comeback. That’s when the Dead Space remake will be released, and whether it’s still relevant will be known, more than 14 years after its initial release.
Dead Space: an ambitious remake to bring back a legend
On July 22, 2021, and after months of rumors, Electronic Arts formalized the development of a remake of Dead Space, originally released in 2008 and created by feu-Visceral Games. The title features Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent on a mining ship called USG Ishimura. This imposing building is no longer responding, and a team is sent to find out what happened and carry out the necessary repairs. On the spot, everything is only death and desolation, foul creatures attack on sight, and chaos reigns. To top it all, Isaac Clarke’s girlfriend, Nicole Breenan, is part of the crew.
Then begins a horror adventure with crazy atmospherewhich, in its time, immediately became a reference, selling at more than two million copies. Dead Space will know two suites, released in 2011 and 2013, but the changes made to the formula and the spin-offs did not convince. In 2021, therefore, EA Motive formalizes the remake of Dead Space first of the name, rebuilding the entire title with the Frostbite Engineand modernizing the overall experience for the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
Players who launch the remake will discover references to the rest of the universea game without loading times, NPCs better inserted into the story, more detailed creatures and marked with more details, additional lore or zero gravity sequences and lots of new stuff in terms of gameplay. Something to discover or rediscover in the best possible conditions Dead Space. During the various presentations, players had noticed that the sounds of the plasma cutter and the assault rifle were strange. This has immediately taken into accountand these sounds have been reworked.
A remake capable of scaring its own developers?
EA Motive wants to make players happy, and serve a remake that makes sense. It will be necessary to wait for the test to know if the bet is successful, but in the meantime, the developers confide. As if to give even more relevance to the idea of making a remake of this cult game, some members of the team have indicated be afraid to play the remake, because it would be more terrifying than ever. In an interview with Play magazine, the game’s technical director, David Robillardsaid he struggled to play for the title, especially at night:
When I play it at night, I can’t play it with headphones. It’s just too scary. It’s the level of realism and, again, the mood. Not just visually, right? In the way we manage sound, ambience, effects, with systems that will try to scare you. These things, you know, could have been done (on PS4), but not at the level we’re doing them today. And they really add a lot to this genre (…).
So, simple communication, or a real leap forward allowing a game that is almost 15 years old to become cult a second time? We’ll know in just a few days, January 27. A few weeks after The Callisto Protocol whose sales were below expectations, Dead Space has a huge card to play. Waiting for a movie?
