As announced by Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers closes its doors in 2023, after a series of rumors and speculations the confirmation of the end of support for the game arrives. released in September 2020. Let’s retrace the history of this unfortunate project.
Marvel’s Avengers is announced in 2017 as The Avengers Project, the first project in a wide-ranging collaboration between Square Enix and Marvel Entertainment. The game then comes out in 2020 but right from the start the title struggles to conquer the public and the press, despite the fair reviews, something is missing, that quid that perhaps one would expect from a high-budget game on one of the most loved and profitable franchises ever.
Sales don’t take offpost-launch support continues and new characters arrive, the game drops in price, there is a small growth in sales but it is not enough, Square Enix is dissatisfied with the commercial results of Marvel’s Avengers, result shared with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the game on the Guardians of the Galaxy always published by the Japanese publisher and unable to collect the commercial success initially hoped for.
As the months go by it appears as clear as Crystal Dynamics (now owned by Embracer Group) e Square Enix have decided to give up the shot, updates are less frequent and post-launch support in general seems to limp, despite a project designed to last for ten years, a phrase that now seems like a mantra repeated by live game developers. Indeed, it seems that everything was ready for the debut of She-Hulk, the character sequences have already been dubbed but She-Hulk will never arrive.
But what exactly went wrong? It’s hard to say for sure, probably the multiplayer and live nature didn’t help at a time when everyone was expecting a third-person single player adventure with a cinematic cut. The lack of the “cinematic” Avengers also certainly affected the appeal of the game, with players perhaps wishing to impersonate the characters so loved in the cinema, rather than anonymous versions of the latter.
In general, it is the Square Enix x Marvel project that has not worked particularly well, despite the fact that the publisher has entrusted the development of the licensed games to two high-profile studios such as Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. The result? Marvel’s Avengers will die with the latest update on March 31st while from 30 September 2023 the game will be removed from sale, even if it will still be possible to continue playing in single and multiplayer but without any support.
