The sixth weekend in the cinema charts was tough for Avatar – The Way of Water. Despite strong titles like the horror flick M3GAN or Puss in Boots from Shrek, Avatar 2 was able to confidently defend its top position. Only with the theatrical release of Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, should it be over with sole domination of the worldwide cinema charts. Until then, there is still enough time to climb the list of the most successful films of all time and displace one great classic after the other. This has already been achieved in Germany. In Germany, James Cameron now occupies places 1 – 3 of the highest-grossing films of all time. Internationally, however, things are not quite that far yet.
After Star Wars and Jurassic World, Avatar 2 now also replaces Marvel’s Avengers
This past weekend, James Cameron accomplished something no filmmaker has ever done before. He is now the first director to have three films in his résumé that have grossed more than 2 billion US dollars worldwide. In addition to Avatar: Pandora and Avatar – The Way of Water, Titanic, which is re-launching in cinemas these days with 3D, HFR and HDR, is one of a total of six films that managed to break through this magical barrier. The other blockbusters are Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, as well as Marvel’s Avengers Infinity War and Endgame.

Star Wars should soon have to believe in it. The start of the sequel trilogy of the Skywalker saga is only missing around 20 million US dollars in box office. Whether it will finally reach the top is unlikely. Avatar 1 is still in first place with a whopping 2.9 billion US dollars. The successor is still a long way from that.
