Microsoft is working on a major update to File Explorer in Windows 11. It should improve the user interface of the program and add new features. According to Windows Central, the redesigned app will feature a modern design that matches the look and feel of Windows 11, as well as features for deeper integration between Microsoft 365 and OneDrive.
You can already find internal layouts of the updated File Explorer on the web. They showcase a redesigned header, an updated search box, and a new home button. The File Explorer home page provides deeper integration with Microsoft 365, showing large document thumbnails that include appointments, downloads, and co-worker comments.
The UI changes are minor, but more closely match the overall look of Windows 11, with rounded buttons and more touch-friendly controls. Microsoft hasn’t made a drastic change to File Explorer since Windows 8. The last modification was released last October to bring tabbed browsing to Windows 11’s latest major update.
Microsoft is also reportedly working on a new File Explorer gallery area that will include larger photo previews. In addition, Microsoft is working on a tagging feature for File Explorer to help you tag and organize files.

Microsoft itself has yet to officially announce these changes to File Explorer. However, parts of the code associated with these changes were discovered in the latest test builds of Windows 11. These innovations are expected to become available by the end of 2023.
