More than two years after its release, the Playstation 5 is finally available to some extent. Although the coveted console is once again sold out on Amazon at the time these lines are published, Saturn and Media Markt are still offering bundles with included games and additional controllers, which should be delivered by February 28th at the latest. According to Sony, availability is said to continue to improve, with the Playstation 5 soon to be found on retail shelves. But fans are already thinking one step further and are demanding a PS5 Pro. However, the well-known leaker Tom Henderson is leaning more towards a Playstation 6 when he summarizes the latest rumors in the industry.
Playstation 5 Pro or Playstation 6 – what is Sony up to?
Will the hopes for a “real” Playstation 5 (buy now €708.00) Pro with significantly more power be confirmed more than two years after the release of the basic model? In the previous generation of consoles, Sony took this step to meet the increased hardware requirements of titles such as The Last of Us 2 or God of War with a Playstation 4 Pro. However, it seems that we are only seeing a revised version of the PS5, for example with a removable drive.
According to leaker Tom Hendersen, there will only be one hardware iteration of the Playstation 5. This indirectly contradicts information from the French site Phonandroid, which reports a model with water cooling and better AMD chips. However, Tom Henderson is not sure whether players will ever be able to buy a model with the “Pro” name suffix.
Well-known leaker spreads rumors about a Playstation 6
According to Tom Henderson, Sony will end production of the current model of the Playstation 5 (with and without a disc drive) by the end of the year. Instead, however, there will be no slimmer “Slim” version and no “Pro” model either. According to his understanding, Sony will revise the basic model in such a way that one can rather speak of a “second generation” of the Playstation 5.

There is said to be an optional external disc drive for this purely digital Playstation 5, which can be connected to the new model, but not to the “old” purely digital PS5. The advantage of this variant would be that Sony would only have to produce one model in the future, which would be significantly more cost-saving in terms of production and shipping.

The new model is rumored to be revealed soon, with production starting in April and finally the PS5 with detachable disc drive going on sale in September. Will there be a Playstation 5 with a new design? According to leaker Tom Henderson, the appearance of the second generation should not change fundamentally. Asked about a Playstation 5 Pro with better technology, he reiterates: “It doesn’t feel like the potential of the regular version has been fully exploited. Nor will it be available in large numbers before the end of the year. All I can say , is that I hear more about a Playstation 6 than a PS5 Pro.”

Assuming that the regular lifespan of a console is 6-7 years and considering the effects of the corona pandemic on the production and availability of the PS5, then a Playstation 6 should still be a long way off. Although the development of a new generation of consoles begins years before the actual announcement, Sony should be very interested in making the current PS5 and possible further developed models available smoothly in order to sell as many devices as possible.
