A few months ago, we got really excited as everything seemed to be gearing up for mass adoption of the new LPDDR5X memory in the world of high-end Android smartphones. Something that is now being proven, with the launch of the RedMagic 8 Pro, and the imminent launch of the new Galaxy S23.
However, the reign of this type of memory as the fastest in the mobile world was short-lived. In the end, SK Hynix already has an alternative, which, in a very curious way, even has Turbo in the name.
LPDDR5X is no longer the fastest RAM! Make way for LPDDR5T DRAM memory!
Therefore, SK Hynix has now announced that it has the fastest mobile RAM on the planet, called LPDDR5Tthat is, Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo. We are talking about memory capable of reaching 9.6 gigabits per second (Gbps). Which is clear, means a performance increase of around 13%, compared to the LPDDR5X memory that Samsung is now implementing in its high-end smartphones.
Interestingly, to emphasize the increase in speed, SK Hynix put the ‘T’ in Turbo, in the name of the memory. But does this mean higher consumption and higher operating temperatures?
Well, the new memory continues to work in the standard Ultra-Low Voltage range defined by JEDEC (1.01~1.12V). Basically being an optimization of the LPDDR5X memory originally announced in November 2022. However, it seems that mass production of this type of memory should only start in the second half of 2023.
In short, we are talking about memory capable of processing 77 GB of data per second, which is equivalent to more or less 15 FHD movies. It is also very likely the peak of the current standard, before the arrival of LPDDR6 memory.
