About two weeks ago, Microsoft introduced a small, practical innovation for its current Xbox consoles, which will be introduced to Xbox Series X and S via a software update. The new energy saving function makes it possible to run downloads in the background at times when the power supply is being generated in a particularly sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. A practical side effect for gamers: The new function also generally saves up to 20 percent on the power consumption of the Xbox Series devices, according to Microsoft – this has a positive effect on the wallet, especially in times of high electricity costs. But right-wing politicians and other right-wing populists want to have found a big “woke” conspiracy in the new function – and base their entire argument on lies and untruths.
US politician shares right-wing lies
Ted Cruz, a far-right Republican Senator in the United States, tweeted: “First gas ovens, then your coffee, now they’re shooting at your Xbox (buy now).” He shared an article on the right-wing populist website Blaze News. Suffice it for Twitter, even under the auspices of Elon Musk, to add a corrective note to the tweet, stating that both Ted Cruz’s tweet and the content of the article are false and do not correspond to reality.
Right-wing populists construct fairy tales of lies
Other right-wing populist and radical right-wing opinion makers and agitators joined in the shitstorm about what they called Microsoft’s “woke” action in unison with the same lies over and over again. They claim that man-made climate change does not exist, ignoring the overwhelming scientific consensus on the subject.
Lying construct is intended to stir up fear
But that’s not all, the right-wing populists are spinning a frightening fairy tale out of the new energy-saving function of the Xbox Series X and S, according to which the new software function should “recruit children even earlier for climate policy”. The fact that most gamers are adults is just as ignored as the reality of climate change, which has been making itself felt all over the world for decades, most recently with, for example, drought and long periods of heat in summer in this country.
Right-wing extremists are not interested in facts
The article on the right-wing website Blaze News, which serves as the basis for Ted Cruz and Co.’s “argument”, is also based on the fundamental lie that Microsoft would force gamers to save electricity and emissions with the new function by the performance of the Xbox Series X and S would be throttled.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer speaks about “painful” but necessary layoffs for the “long-term success of the company”.
This is complete nonsense, however. As Microsoft corrects, the feature is now activated by default on new consoles, but can be switched off at any time. In addition, the performance of the console is neither throttled nor changed in any way. For right-wing extremist agitators and populists, facts and facts – as is so often the case – are completely irrelevant in this case.
