If Google insolently dominates the world of search engines, Bing does not give up and offers a points and rewards system to encourage Internet users to take the plunge. Is it really interesting or Microsoft is kidding you?
Rewards for using Bing? I didn’t even know
Since you like a show of hands, let’s make one. Who here uses Google? Well, that’s a lot of people. Now, who uses Bing? Person ? If, gentleman in the background with your bowler hat, you really use Bing? But why ? Rewards?
And yes, I discovered it myself recently, Microsoft, the group behind Windows also takes care of Bing, the unloved search engine, our Poulidor, eternal second behind the juggernaut that is Google. In 2021, 92% of searches were done on Google, where Bing gleans barely 3.8%, with 1.4% for Yahoo. An overwhelming domination that does not please Microsoft, which racked its brains to find a way to go up the slope: les Microsoft Rewards.
This is’a point system that we obtain by carrying out various actions, mainly turned around Internet searches to be carried out on Bing. The more queries you type in the Bing bar, the more points you earn. You can then use these points to unlock rewards, but also participate in sweepstakes to win much more interesting prizes and more quickly.
Is this program worth ditching Google for the Bing experience. I tested Microsoft Rewards for you, and here is what I think.
My feedback on Microsoft Rewards
When we register for the Microsoft Rewards program on this page, we are given the basic information, starting with the point system. Each simple search on Bing gives us 3 points. You can see at the top right of the screen the total number of points you have. But itMicrosoft Rewards dashboard is where it all happens.
On this page you can see:The points we have accumulated: the total points, the points of the day, but also the points of donations. Because yes, it is possible to choose an association to donate money without having to spend yourself.Daily challenges: to earn more points, Microsoft invites us to complete many daily challenges, such as performing a precise search in one click to earn 10 points at once, answering a short survey, changing your profile picture, taking part in a quiz, etc.View all awards: the “Use” tab shows everything that can be earned with points. There are subscriptions like the Game Pass or Spotify Premium, or even gift vouchers for stores like Fnac, Amazon or Ikea. This is where you can participate in raffles to win an Xbox or a Microsoft Surface.
Verdict on Microsoft Rewards: a huge black spot
In short, a rather clear interface, and the system of levels and quests to complete almost looks like a video game, but what is the point of this system? To give you a quick conclusion, it’s far from a good system, because of one big problem: the point gain is way too low.
3 points for a search, 10 points for a completed challenge, more to get a €5 Amazon voucher, you need… 7500 points. Yes, 7500 points. It’s huge, it will take you months to complete the bar, especially since you have to go to the dashboard and not Bing each time to complete the challenges that earn a lot of points.
Another big disappointment: donations to associations. If you prefer to give to others, be aware that Microsoft does not offer a more generous scale: 1000 points to be obtained for giving 1€, and no degression… So of course, you earn lots of points if you connect every day, that you use Microsoft Edge or play Xbox games, but in the end, I felt helpless, and I gave up quite quickly, seeing very well the disproportionate but necessary investment to obtain what one wishes in the future close.
Example : It is possible to earn around 500 points a day if you log in daily for 5 minutes, to earn 15,000 points and pay yourself an Amazon gift voucher of €10. Except that earn €10 for a total of 2.5 hours of time is far from worth it.
The only positive point is the draw system: having the chance to win several jackpots per month with a participation cost of only 200 points is quite satisfying, all without having to invest in Microsoft Rewards as a quarantine invests in World of Warcraft.
