January 28th, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. by Jonathan Harsch – A multiplayer title is currently being played on Steam by many users, which is not doing well in the ratings. This is the tactical role-playing game Warlander, whose interesting premise can hide some quality defects.
There are so many parties fighting for the attention of Steam users that it can be extremely difficult for small productions to even get seen. It’s all the more amazing when it works. This is also the case with Warlander, which can show a constant player base that is always in the five-digit range (the peak was 12,707 simultaneously logged-in users). With numbers like that, you’d think the title would be extremely popular, but that’s not quite the case. Warlander only gets 61 percent approval on Steam and accordingly ends up with a rating of “Balanced”.
This is how the tactical RPG Warlander plays
Despite the many bad user ratings, Warlander seems to have something about it that makes it interesting for a wide range of players. A main reason is probably the multiplayer aspect, which keeps the number of players constantly high. Warlander is essentially a tactics game, but each player takes on the role of a single character. From the third-person perspective, you try to capture or defend a castle on a battlefield with up to 100 players. It is important that everyone fulfills their task, because many actions can only be implemented in a group.

This genre mix of hack’n’slash, battle royale, MOBA and tactical role-playing game seems to be so much fun that many players can overlook various bugs, technical errors and problems with balancing. In short: Warlander is not a perfectly smooth game from a huge development studio, but a fun experiment that still requires a lot of work on the part of the developers. But the title is currently free-to-play, so anyone interested can play it for free and see for themselves.
