Square Enix has been hugely successful with its HD-2D titles such as Octopath Traveler, Live A Live and Triangle Strategy. Team Asano is already hard at work on a sequel to Octopath Traveler as well as a remake of Dragon Quest 3, but now they seem to have run out of ideas and are asking fans what to do next.
The poll, posted on the official Square Enix website, asks fans about Team Asano’s past games, as well as where the team should focus their efforts next. The poll asks fans two very interesting questions: “What genre of video games would you like to see Team Asano develop?” and “What games would you like to see remastered or remastered in the future? (Not limited to Square Enix games)”.
The first question is intriguing, since most of Team Asano’s work so far has been old school RPGs. Triangle Strategy brings in a bit of turn-based tactics, but all HD-2D games have mostly stuck to the classic JRPG genre. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t fit other genres – you could imagine Rad Racer or the first Star Ocean remastered in HD-2D. But Square Enix is basically a developer that makes RPGs. Perhaps that’s why it was noted in the second question that fans might suggest remastering or remastering non-Square Enix games in the future.
A few non-Square Enix RPGs come to mind, like Earthbound, Golden Sun, or Shin Megami Tensei. Team Asano’s collaboration with Atlus really sounds exciting. Let’s see if this survey shows a high enough demand for such cooperation.
Fans have until February 8 to fill out the survey, which is open to Japanese residents only. To sweeten the deal, Square Enix is also running a random giveaway where respondents can win limited editions of the Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy promo packs (including t-shirts, mousepads, posters, and character cards), a Live A Live Collector’s Edition, and Bluetooth speakers with themed Bravely Default 2.
