“The Light in the Darkness”, which is about the Holocaust, will also be released for PlayStation. In addition, players can take a look at a video that is around 15 minutes long.
The Light in the Darkness, originally announced for Xbox and PC, is coming also for PlayStation, as the responsible developer Luc Bernard announced in a tweet. According to him, it is the first video game that focuses on the Holocaust. A gameplay video showing 15 minutes from the title is embedded below these lines.
The narrative game aims to educate about the Holocaust and focuses on a fictional family. The events are based on the real-life Vel d’Hiv raid in Paris in 1942, when Jewish families were rounded up by French police under pressure from German authorities.
Players should learn more about the events
The Light in the Darkness follows Moses, Bluma and their son Samuel, Polish-Jewish immigrants who came to France in search of a better life. The player experiences the events leading up to the occupation of France by Nazi Germany up to the atrocities of the Vichy regime.
Game director Luc Bernard hopes that The Light in the Darkness will help players learn more about the events that happened at a time when most of them weren’t alive yet.
To achieve this, the game relies on incorporating survivor testimonies between scenes, allowing players to confront real victims and see how they resemble those in the game. The Light in the Darkness was developed in collaboration with Holocaust researcher and survivor Joan Salter.
“For The Light in the Darkness, I wanted to focus on the Holocaust in France for a number of reasons. For one thing, I’m French and the Holocaust in France is rarely talked about. Another reason is that my grandmother used to tell me stories about her care when I was a child Children of the Kindertransport told in Britain. So the Holocaust shaped my family,” says Bernard.
The game aims to simulate an experience of powerlessness during the Holocaust by conveying a sense of “lack of control”. Accordingly, the players will not be able to make decisions. Instead, the game focuses on experiencing the story from the perspective of the families, humanizing the victims and illuminating the acts of resistance of the people who were exposed to these events.
“Players can access archives and photos and explore the story in what is known as educational mode. In addition to videos by historians, there will also be testimonies from survivors. The aim of the education mode is to make Holocaust education accessible to everyone, including those who do not have the opportunity to visit museums,” Bernard continued.
