Seagate has announced plans for the coming years. This year will be announced hard drives with a capacity of 22 and 24 terabytes. The manufacturer also plans to launch mass production of devices based on HAMR thermomagnetic recording. Seagate is already shipping drives based on the new technology to the enterprise segment. Now is the time for mass adoption of HAMR.
Hard drives based on HAMR technology will have capacities from 30 TB and above. Production of models of this line will begin in June, which is even earlier than planned. It is planned to gradually increase the storage capacity. In the lab, Seagate was able to cram 5TB into a single drive, opening up the possibility of building 10-platter 50TB drives. It is expected that 40 TB models will be launched in 2024, and 50 TB and higher drives will appear by 2026. At the same time, the company itself believes that the share of HAMR devices this year will still be low. They will take a significant share of the market as production increases and the number of available devices increases.
