And there it is, the next series adaptation of a video game. As announced over the weekend, Amazon Prime is starting production of a new series about Lara Croft.
Will Amazon Prime and Lara Croft be the new dream couple? Just a few weeks ago, Amazon Games surprisingly announced that it would be the publisher of Crystal Dynamics’ new Tomb Raider game. According to a report by Hollywood Reporter, the group is now also adding a TV series for Amazon Prime – not surprising, since the sale by Square Enix has left the rights to the brand entirely to the developer studio.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is apparently responsible for the script. The British actress and screenwriter already has an impressive portfolio. Among other things, she took on a role in the hit series Broadchurch, she also wrote the screenplays for the series Fleabag, in which she also took the lead role, for which she received several awards, and for Killing Eve. Waller-Bridge next stars in Indiana Jones 5 opposite Harrison Ford and co-wrote the James Bond film No Time to Die.
However, Waller-Bridge will not play the main role in the series. Who is to follow in the series footsteps of Angeline Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who played Lara Croft in the previous films, is still unknown. In addition to writing, Waller-Bridge is also an executive producer on the Amazon series, along with Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt.
Waller-Bridge was signed by Amazon on a three-year deal after the second and final season of Fleabag won six Primetime Emmys, including Best Comedy Series. Not a small caliber, which gives hope for a good implementation of the series. It is not yet clear when the series will start.
