The most futuristic smartphone will get a sequel
Back in December, Nothing CEO Carl Pei stated that Nothing Phone (2) would not launch anytime soon. He added that the brand is not like other OEMs on the market that release dozens of products a year and will rather focus on Phone(1) and its software development.
As you might expect, this announcement disappointed many fans and potential customers who were expecting the Phone (2). However, in a recent interview with Inverse, the founder of Nothing clarified that Phone (2) will be released in 2023.
Pei confirmed in an interview that Phone(2) will debut in the US. The release of the phone is also expected at the end of 2023. As we know, Nothing’s philosophy is focused on providing better software than its Android competitors, usually chasing hardware specs.
But this time they say that the future Nothing smartphone will be the flagship in the generally accepted sense of the word. This suggests that the phone may cost more than its predecessor. Pei didn’t provide any details, but there were enough hints to confirm that the Phone (2) will have better specifications than its predecessor. “We are developing a more premium smartphone than Nothing Phone(1) , but software will remain our primary focus,” Pei said.
Asked if Phone(2) will compete with flagship devices such as the iPhone 14 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Pei said, “I think the market and the industry have changed a lot since then. For us, the specifications of the Phone (1) were quite useful in terms of user experience,” says Pei. “Mobile chipsets have really improved in the last 7-9 years. That’s why I don’t want to call Phone(2) the flagship, because that would mean that Phone(1) wasn’t the flagship.
In our own portfolio of smartphones, the Phone (1) was the flagship in terms of the care we put into the product. That’s why I used the word premium instead to describe Phone(2), which means it’s more premium, but the same flagship as Phone(1).”
Even though the device is still being developed, we can expect it to be more expensive and with better specs. No design changes were mentioned in the interview, which could mean that Nothing could currently be siding with the Glyph’s translucent body and interface.
