Euro is the excuse of companies but it is worth more than the dollar!

Everything is more expensive, this is a fact, especially in the world of technology, where we can make direct comparisons with last year’s launches. Which even makes some sense! After all, unfortunately, despite the low demand from consumers, production and logistics costs remain very high, not to mention general inflation.

However, there is an excuse often used by the sales and marketing departments of large manufacturers that simply no longer makes sense. For example, in the case of the new Galaxy S23, Samsung apologizes for the difference in the value of the Euro against the dollar. What was true in 2022, but ceased to be true in 2023. The Euro is once again worth more than the dollar. And now?

Why are we talking about this? Well, in case you didn’t know, compared to last year, the range of Galaxy S23 smartphones increased by 13% in Portugal. And of course, the Euro vs Dollar was one of the reasons given.

So, yes, it is true that the devaluation of the euro against the dollar made life difficult for us during 2022. Many products increased in price due to this phenomenon, an effect that we saw more on the fuel side, since the vast majority of oil is negotiated in Dollars, and for that very reason, Europe, down due to the war in Ukraine, was forced to buy a larger quantity, with a weaker currency.

However, this effect is no longer verified! The Euro appreciated significantly at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. After all, at this moment, 1€ = 1.10$.

Yet companies continue to use the exact same excuse, and as if that wasn’t enough, the increases we’ve seen in the past aren’t going away now. But that’s the classic of any crisis with a lot of inflation in the mix… What goes up doesn’t come back down.
