Netflix announced some time ago that they would like to do something about users who share their accounts with several people outside of their own household. Those responsible want to solve this soon with extra costs that additional users of an account have to pay. We recently explained what exactly is planned here in another report. Now there are more details on the implementation of these new account sharing measures.
This is what happens to Netflix customers
The Netflix Help Center (in Costa Rica for the time being) states that all users will have to set a primary location in the future. Anyone staying here can access the account without any problems. However, if you want to use Netflix outside of this location, a new “Extra Member” tariff will apply. As we mentioned earlier, this is the additional fee that needs to be paid monthly. There is no information about the exact price yet. However, it should be cheaper than the basic subscription (€7.99).

Users are also required to log in to the primary site once every 31 days. If you ever go away for a longer period of time, you can get a temporary code that gives you short-term access to your account – without having to worry about being blocked. If you want to change the main location, you can clarify this with the support. Incidentally, extra members can only be added by the account owner.
When will the measures come to us?
If you take a look at the help center for Germany, you can’t find these new rules yet. Only in Costa Rica did the measures appear in the catalog of questions. When we will make the changes remains unclear for the moment. However, it seems to be only a matter of time before there will be restrictions on account sharing in this country.
