Notebooks with AMD Ryzen 7040 (Phoenix) hybrid processors will soon enter the market. In the new APUs, the company used not only x86 cores with the Zen 4 architecture, but also a graphics unit of the RDNA 3 family. The updated iGPU will be able to compete with entry-level discrete 3D accelerators, which is confirmed by the first tests in 3DMark.
A laptop with an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS processor fell into the hands of Chinese enthusiasts. It’s an 8-core/16-thread “gem” with a frequency of 4.0 to 5.2 GHz in dynamic overclocking, 16 MB of third-level cache, integrated Radeon 780M graphics and a 35-54 W TDP. The integrated video core has 12 Compute Units with a frequency of up to 3.0 GHz.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS has been tested in 3DMark TimeSpy on a platform with DDR5-5600 memory. We add that the new product also supports the faster LPDDDR5X-7500. During testing, the iGPU frequency reached 2.8 GHz, and performance measurements were carried out at 25- and 54-watt TDP levels of the processor. For convenience, the results of the Radeon 780M, as well as the closest rivals, are summarized in the table below.
