An unusual picture: for the first time in many months, it is not the Nintendo Switch that takes first place in Japan, but Sony’s PlayStation 5.
The Nintendo Switch has dominated the console market in Japan for years. Now there was a reversal: after a long time, the PS5 finally managed to get to the top of the Japanese hardware charts in the last week of January. And even by a significant margin, since the Sony console has sold almost twice as often as the Switch OLED.
Described more precisely, the drive variant of the PlayStation 5 sold 53,256 units. The model without a drive still found 9,652 buyers. Nintendo’s OLED version of the switch is “only” 28,787 sales. Together with the normal Switch and the Lite version, Nintendo makes it to 51,108 copies – just under the PS5.
For a long time, PS5 sales were limited due to the supply bottleneck. Now the Sony hardware can finally show decent numbers. An increase in sales has already been noticeable on the Japanese market in recent weeks. And just a few days ago, the multinational video game company pointed to the meanwhile better availability hin.

Forspoken in third place
Nintendo continues to dominate the video game charts. Only “Forspoken” was able to join the top 10, the rest is occupied by Switch titles. However, the enchanting action RPG did not sell well: Because of only around 29,000 sales, it was only enough for third place. However, these are retail sales only, so the listing is not particularly meaningful.
