Sony notes that nearly 30 percent of PlayStation 5’s monthly active users have not previously owned a PS4, suggesting that the console maker’s wider availability can bring a new group of gamers into the PlayStation universe.
Sony ended the past Christmas quarter with a high number of PS5 shipments and is so optimistic that the forecast for the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2023 has been raised. 19 million PS5 consoles sold the company plans for the twelve months.
Apparently not only PlayStation fans who switch from PS4 to PS5 are responsible for the success. Rather, Sony Interactive Entertainment assumes that 30 percent of all active PS5 players in December 2022 were new to the PlayStation world without having previously owned a PS4.
Acquisition of new users is progressing
Sony’s statement suggests that the Japanese console leader can be successful in attracting new gamers, not just those migrating to the new hardware from the previous generation.
“In addition, almost 30 percent of the monthly active users of the PS5 are those players who have not used PS4 before, so as the PS5 spreads, the acquisition of new users is progressing,” according to the company in its wording.
However, this survey should be treated with a little caution. For example, since Sony appears to be referring to unique accounts used on the PS5, it could also include accounts newly created for the PS5 by former PS4 players, for example to access content from other regions.
Sony defines monthly active users as the number of accounts that played games or used services on PlayStation Network in the last month of the quarter. At the same time, the PS5 producer emphasizes that the surveys are “based on company research and may be updated in the future”.
PS5 players are more active
In another section of the annual report, Sony also explains that PS4 players are driving higher engagement after switching to the PS5.
“The engagement metrics of users who switched from PS4 to PS5, such as B. PS Plus subscription rate, game length and average spend amount are significantly higher than PS4 users,” the company said.

Ultimately, the number of PS5 players is likely to increase even further in the coming months. Last week, Sony signaled that the delivery problems are largely over. “If you’re looking to buy a PS5 console, you should now have a much easier time finding one from retailers around the world,” the company said.
