Things seem to be moving on the side of the Lord of the Rings saga. After the acquisition of partial rights by Amazon, one of the historical owners of the license is invited to bow out. This could herald the start of new movies and/or video games.

The uncertain future of Middle-earth
What follows is to be taken with a grain of salt. According to Fellowship of Fans, specialists in The Lord of the Rings franchise, Middle-Earth Enterprises (MEE) – owner of film and merchandising rights – reportedly officially invited Warner Bros. to give away the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Indeed, MEE, recently acquired by Embracer Group, would like to recover the rights in order to put them back on the market later.
Such a resale would probably interest Amazon which as a reminder to pay 1 billion US dollars for the acquisition of the rights and the production of season 1 of the Rings of Power. Embracer Group could also embark on a series of playful adaptations (board games) via Asmodee and/or videogames thanks to the creative teams of THQ Nordic, Plaion, Gearbox Entertainment, etc. Netflix et Disney are also options not to be overlooked. The demise of the rights would be the start of a new era for Middle-earth.
A booming universe
While waiting to know the end of this story of “assignment of rights”, the Lord of the Rings license will be rewarded in the months / years to come with several adaptations in different formats. The Lord of the Rings Season 2: The Rings of Power, whose release date on Amazon Prime Video remains a mystery, is not the only project to be set in Middle-earth. We particularly think of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum (an adventure game centered on the eponymous character) and The Lord of the Rings : Adventure to Mount Doom (a cooperative board game published by Thames & Kosmos). Sold for $49.95, the latter will be marketed this year.
