Technological developments in video games have always been synonymous with increasingly realistic quality visualizations. We are even at a point where it is no longer easy to distinguish which is the digital characterization of a famous actor or actress and which is just a real photo of themselves. Relying on the Decima Engine as the basis for the first series, this was also achieved by Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, which at that time was built for an increasingly “aging” machine – Playstation 4. The good news? The visual looks like it will improve in the second series that was previously announced – Death Stranding 2.
Which is interesting? The more realistic visuals will not come from the technical side and improvements from the Decima Engine itself. It will come treatment on the lighting system for better character models. This was revealed by Hideo Kojima via his Twitter account, where he invited a Lighting Director – Nishiyama to teach the crew how to treat lighting effects in the real world. Kojima calls this a valuable experience because most of his teams only do this within the scope of video games.
In order to make photorealistic CG more realistic, we invited Mr. Nishiyama, a lighting director to give a lecture and demonstration to KJP artist team. This experience will be reflected in the creation of future games. Please look forward to it. pic.twitter.com/eLfHorsfzE

Since our staff have only experienced lighting within a CG environment, we had a lighting director demonstrate the basics of live-action lighting in order to familiarize them with this technique. pic.twitter.com/9WijSmJ4xq— HIDEO_KOJIMA (@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN) February 1, 2023
This reference, called Kojima, will be applied in the real-time engine to achieve a more realistic image quality later. Kojima himself hasn’t talked much about the confirmed Death Stranding 2 release window for Playstation 5. Will this increase be significant? Let’s wait.
