Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed, in an interview granted to the Japanese magazine GAME Watch, that Gran Turismo 7 was actually born for Virtual Reality. However, the patron of Polyphony Digital clarified that the PlayStation VR2 controllers will not be compatible with the game. The reason, obvious to many, consists in the fact that the ideal combination to enjoy Gran Turismo 7 VR is with PS VR2 and steering wheelor alternatively the already excellent PS5 DualSense.
For this reason, working on compatibility with Sony viewer controllers would have been just useless, and honestly it’s a reasoning that doesn’t make sense, even if the controllers could have been implemented to “simulate” the grip of a steering wheel. In any case, for Yamauchi the ideal is to use a steering wheel, as with the latter you really have the sensation of being on board a car.
“We didn’t bother to make it compatible. Basically, you sit down and use the gas pedal, the brake pedal and the steering wheel to control a car, so the DualSense features were enough for us. In addition, many Gran Turismo players use steering wheels, and the combination of this plus PS VR 2 is the exact experience of driving a car,” said Kazunori Yamauchi.
Polyphony Digital has put a lot of work into integrating VR into the game, and we can expect just as much care across the lines also on Gran Turismo 8, which they are currently working on. Gran Turismo 7 VR will be released in the form of a free upgrade and will accompany the PlayStation VR2 launch line-upobviously exclusive to PlayStation 5. The game will be fully playable with the headset, including online modes.
