In the US, Avatar – The Way of Water is slowly but surely running out of steam. For its eighth weekend, legendary filmmaker James Cameron’s visual masterpiece (Return of Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Titanic) slipped from the top spot to tumble to No. 3. A Marvel star, a main character in the Harry Potter films and the greatest American football players of all time came together to dethrone the blockbuster. In Germany, however, things are a little different. There it will probably take until the theatrical release of Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania for Avatar 2 to say goodbye to the top.
Avatar 2 defends first place in Germany
In Germany, Avatar – The Way of Water confidently defended first place in the cinema charts. According to the latest trend analyses, slightly more than 300,000 film fans in this country will have seen the sequel to Avatar: Pandora’s Eighth Weekend.
This success means that Avatar – The Way of Water has reached two important milestones in Germany. A total of over 9 million tickets for the blockbuster have already been sold. And since hefty surcharges are sometimes required per cinema ticket due to multiple overlengths, 3D, Dolby Sound, HFR (High Frame Rate) and HDR (High Dynamic Range), Avatar – The Way of Water has now also been able to trump its predecessor.
In Germany, Avatar: Aufbruch nach Pandora, including re-releases, brought in just over 119 million euros. The successor, launched 13 years later, has been slightly above this weekend. However, it should be noted that only the turnover and not the number of viewers is taken into account here. Also, these figures are not adjusted for inflation.

Only 3rd place left: Avatar 2 dethroned by two films
An American football icon, Harry Potter’s best friend and a Marvel star are sinking Avatar 2 into the box office.
This puts Avatar – The Way of Water in second place in the list of the highest-grossing films of all time. With Titanic, another box office hit by James Cameron reigns supreme. Avatar 2 is currently around 6.2 million euros behind Titanic.
