In 2022, Google offered a line of smartphones that have gained high popularity: the Pixel 6a proved to be a solid mid-ranger, and the flagship Pixel 7 series received well-deserved recognition from both analysts and consumers. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed in his Q4 2022 report that the 2022 Pixel phone line has performed brilliantly.
“The 2022 Pixel 6A, 7 and 7 Pro are the best-selling phones we have ever released. And we have increased our share in every market we operate in this year,” he said in his report.
This is a notable achievement as Google already announced a year ago that it set a quarterly sales record for the fourth quarter of 2021 thanks to the Pixel 6 series. So this is the second year in a row that Google’s smartphone sales have grown. Despite this, Google still occupies a small market share, the company is not even among the top five global players. It would be all the more interesting to find out what share the manufacturer can get in North America, where it has the strongest positions.
Google and the rest of the smartphone industry could face major growth challenges in 2023. According to Canalys, smartphone shipments are down 12% in 2022, and the company expects sales to deteriorate further. So it could be a challenge for Google to keep growing in 2023, even with the Pixel Fold expected later this year.
And now the intrigue is whether Google will be able to maintain the momentum in the production and sale of smartphones in 2023.
