A key feature of the Quest 3 headset will be Meta* Reality technology, which will allow the device to be used not only as a virtual reality (VR) headset, but also as an augmented reality (AR) gadget. Thus, the novelty will be a mixed reality headset. Meta* Reality is already supported by the more expensive Quest Pro model.
The fact that the new VR / AR headset is likely to be called Meta * Quest 3, the company confirmed in earlier financial reports, writes The Verge. At the same time, it was assumed that the device would go on sale by the end of 2023. Zuckerberg expects the Quest 3 to be priced between $300 and $500, at most a third of the price of the Quest Pro, which is aimed at professional users.
“The mixed reality (MR) ecosystem is relatively new, but I believe that it will be actively developed over the coming years. Later this year, we are going to release a new generation of consumer device that will support mixed reality. And I expect that the technologies embedded in it will become the base line from which the company will build on the development of subsequent headsets and AR glasses, ”Zuckerberg said at a meeting of shareholders.
At the moment, it is not clear which mixed reality features will be supported by the device in the middle price segment. For example, the Quest Pro headset is equipped with two cameras to digitize the real space around the user for subsequent interaction with surrounding objects using augmented reality functions. Whether Quest 3 will offer something similar is still unknown. The current version of the Quest 2 virtual reality headset is equipped with basic environmental analysis capabilities and can only display a low-resolution monochrome picture of the real world on the screen. Earlier rumors claimed that Quest 3 will receive a stage depth sensor, which will give the device the ability to measure the space in front of the user and track the movements of his hands.
According to The Verge, the Meta* Reality features in Quest Pro are not as impressive as advertised. In a review of the device, there were problems with color reproduction when transferring a picture of the real world to the display of the device, which also seemed grainy. At the same time, the Quest Pro screen is difficult to read in low light, and it is almost impossible to read the screen of a smartphone or computer through the headset display.
According to UploadVR, the upcoming Quest 3 headset will also get “pancake” lenses, which will make the device more compact. In addition, the novelty will receive a more productive Qualcomm processor.
