The iPhone Edge, the first generation model released in 2007, still has its followers: an auction that is taking place at the moment proves it. The starting price of $2,500 on this Apple smartphone could skyrocket in the days to come.
Love or hate Apple, there’s no denying that the American company has revolutionized the world of mobile telephony. In 2007, when Steve Jobs took the stage in San Francisco to formalize the first iPhone, the era of the smartphone has begun.
The 1st generation iPhone, also known as iPhone Edge or iPhone 2G, has since become a cult object. And some are now counting on this status to sell an unopened copy at a high price.
An iPhone 1 that could reach 50,000 dollars
At the time of its release, the 1st generation iPhone was sold for $599 by Apple. Considering inflation and the evolution of prices in dollars since 2007, this would correspond today to approximately 850 dollars. Today, the cheapest version of the iPhone 14 is sold for 799 dollars in the United States. All prices are exclusive of tax.
But today, a brand new iPhone Edge, still wrapped in its plastic, is worth a lot more. The interest is not technological, since this model of Apple smartphone is now completely outdated. It is above all the collector side that prevails: a sealed iPhone 1 is very rare today.
This is why the model put up for auction a few days ago is causing a stir. Its starting price is 2500 dollars, but according to the estimate of the LCG Auctions site, it is estimated at 50,000 dollars. This corresponds to the value of 62 iPhone 14.
Apple won’t get anything from the sale of this iPhone
“The first original iPhone in factory-sealed condition is widely considered a premium asset among high-end collectors,” the site explains. He also recalls that public sales that took place in August and October 2022 saw such models sell at $35,414 and $39,339.
The current model is billed as “the first original iPhone in fair condition to be auctioned since the record-breaking October sale.” Its owner, a certain Karen Green, appeared on the American show The Doctor & The Diva in a section called Treasure Hunt, in which astonishing objects are presented (from 7 min 30 s in the video).
As these lines are written, iPhone Edge topped $15,000 with 14 auctions under its belt. There are almost two weeks left before the end of the sale, so we can easily imagine that this price will go up further. What is certain is that this money will not go into Apple’s pocket… for once!
