SE NNEGC Energoatom announces that on February 7, 2023, a mobile gas turbine power plant received from USAID as part of the assistance to the energy industry, whose facilities were damaged as a result of Russian rocket attacks, was presented in Ukraine. The event was attended by Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko and Energoatom President Petr Kotin, as well as US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and USAID Deputy Administrator Isabelle Coleman.
The gas turbine mobile power plant was manufactured by General Electric in the USA and was transported by two flights from Yuma Airport to Rzeszow Airport (Poland). NNEGC “Energoatom” organized its subsequent transportation to Ukraine.
An example of a mobile gas turbine power plant
The gas turbine plant will increase the available generating capacity by 28 MW. It will make it possible to quickly restore power to the NPP’s own needs in the event of a blackout. 28 MW is more than the shunting (allowing you to quickly respond to changes and peak load) power of one VVER-1000 nuclear power unit. Such stations can provide power to critical infrastructure facilities, which will make it possible to supply the population with electricity and heat.
The additional capacity of the station will help the power system, but will not protect against blackouts – there should be much more such stations. Energoatom is preparing personnel to work on such equipment in case of further deliveries.
The mobile power plant was installed at one of the critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, connected to the power grid and will start operating in the near future.
Import of electricity from the European Union
The supply of new powerful equipment is not the only measure to provide additional generation in the energy system of Ukraine. In late January, enterprises began importing energy from the European Union for their own production needs with a capacity of up to 300 MW, Andrei Gerus, head of the BP Energy Committee, told LIGA.net.
Thanks to imports, factories and plants will be able to avoid rolling blackouts, increasing production volumes. First of all, energy is imported by enterprises for which its price is not as important as the availability itself. The continuous supply of electricity will allow not to stop the production cycle, as a result of which the products would become unusable. Among buyers of electricity from the EU are metallurgy enterprises and oil extraction plants.
Import from the European Union is much cheaper than the operation of diesel generators: instead of 20 UAH per kWh, the enterprise in this case pays only 6 UAH per kWh. It also pays for the distribution of electricity, but the cost of this service increases the price not so much. Import helps to overcome the capacity limitation of diesel generators and get the 30-50 MW required by the enterprise.
The first municipal small power plant with a capacity of 1 MW was launched in Irpen. In the near future – 100 similar stations throughout Ukraine
